 Un drenaje torácico es un tubo de aproximadamente 1 cm de grosor que atraviesa la pared del tórax y comunica a ésta con un sistema colector que almacena el líquido drenado y expulsa el aire al ambiente impidiendo su regreso al tórax. Esto permite mantener el pulmón expandido tras la cirugía, proporcionarnos información acerca de la integridad de la cicatriz en su superficie y, según la cantidad drenada, retirar lo mas pronto posible el drenaje y preparar al paciente para el alta. Los dispositivos clásicos, en uso todavía en muchos centros, sólo permitían contabilizar el débito y el aire de manera aproximada y durante el momento que durara la visita médica. El dispositivo Thopaz que utilizamos en Cirugía Torácica Avanzada es digital y nos muestra la cantidad exacta de aire y líquido expulsado a través de una gráfica, optimizando así el manejo y la pronta retirada del tubo de tórax. Además, tiene un sistema de aspiración integrado que hace posible la deambulación precoz sin tener que depender del sistema de aspiración de la pared de la habitación. El paciente puede caminar inmediatamente tras la intervención, sin depender de conexiones en su habitación, lo que acelera aún más el proceso de recuperación. En caso de que fuera recomendable mantener el drenaje durante varios días, este nuevo sistema permite el alta a domicilio, el control ambulatorio del mismo y la retirada posteriormente, en nuestras consultas, de manera completamente ambulatoria. De esta forma se evita prolongar innecesariamente la estancia en el hospital y se reducen los riesgos de la misma. Los pacientes con drenaje ambulatorio pueden ducharse, pasear por la calle y evolucionar en su postoperatorio, de una forma discreta y con total seguridad.
